Frank Lampard discusses Kepa situation ahead of Spurs: ‘Things can obviously change’

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard this afternoon provided a brief insight into his decision to drop goalkeeper Kepa, ahead of his side’s crunch meeting with Tottenham.

Kepa struggling

One of the major talking points surrounding Chelsea of late has been the change between the posts at Stamford Bridge.

Up until recently, Spanish shot-stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga had stood as the Blues’ undisputed first-choice.

Having begun to justify his hefty price-tag with a string of superb displays towards the end of the 2018/19 campaign, Kepa was expected to kick on and stake his claim as one of world football’s finest goalkeepers this season.

However, this has since proven far from the case.

The 25-year-old has, particularly over the last couple of months, slipped into a major slump, which has seen him cost Chelsea a number of points.

In fact, as of last month, the former Athletic Bilbao man was the owner of the worst save percentage of any Premier League goalkeeper this season.

‘Nothing final’

As such, 3 weeks ago, Frank Lampard made the tough decision to drop his no.1, in favour of the experienced Willy Caballero.

The former Manchester City man has been handed starts in the Londoners’ last 2 outings, versus Leicester and Manchester United.

Chelsea, though, failed to pick up 3 points in either of these fixtures.

As a result, speaking in a press conference today ahead of his side’s crucial Premier League meeting with Tottenham tomorrow afternoon, Frank Lampard was once again drawn on Kepa’s situation.

And the English tactician was quick to assure that his side’s record signing is in with every chance of regaining his starting status.

Lampard stopped short, though, of revealing whether or not Kepa will feature versus Spurs:

‘I’m paid to make decisions.’

‘So with form I have to consider the goalkeeper position.’

‘Recently it’s just changed, but that’s nothing final.’

‘All Kepa needs to do is train and show a great attitude, as I demand from all the players.’

‘And things can obviously change. But all I want is the best for the team.’
