Jose Mourinho on PL title race: ‘If Liverpool beat Man City, they win the league’

Jose Mourinho has this afternoon weighed in on what he feels the repercussions of a Liverpool win over Manchester City today would be in the race for the Premier League title.

Liverpool vs Man City

The English top-flight’s top-2 are set to go head-to-head at Anfield shortly.

Champions City currently sit 6 points adrift of Jurgen Klopp’s table-toppers, having already fallen to a pair of surprise defeats over the early months of the campaign.

Liverpool, on the other hand, remain unbeaten to this point, with their only dropped points of the season having come in a 1-1 stalemate at Manchester United three weeks ago.

As such, another win for Jurgen Klopp’s men would see them move a hefty 9 points clear of City in the race for Premier League supremacy, an advantage which many would no doubt view as insurmountable based on the Reds’ early-season form.

A victory for the visitors at Anfield on Sunday, on the other hand, would see the gap closed to just 3 points.

‘If Liverpool win…’

One individual who is firmly of the opinion that a Liverpool triumph this afternoon would all-but end the Premier League title race as a contest, meanwhile, is Jose Mourinho.

Former Man United boss Mourinho, speaking as part of his role as a pundit in the Sky Sports studio, was drawn on the Anfield showdown, with the Portuguese tactician having been typically blunt when questioned on how much of a blow a Liverpool victory would deal to Man City’s hopes of retaining their crown:

‘9 points, for a very good team, is a distance that you just have to control. If Liverpool wins the game today, I think they will win the league’
