Dover Athletic 1-0 Southend United

Ruel Sotiriou came off the bench to win the game on his debut for Dover Athletic

Non-league Dover Athletic knocked League One strugglers Southend United out of the FA Cup as a late goal from debutant Ruel Sotiriou won their first-round tie.

The National League outfit, 37 places below the Shrimpers in the league pyramid, had the better chances at Crabble and pulled off a deserved upset.

Substitute Sotiriou outmuscled defender Harry Lennon to latch onto a ball forward and then fired a fierce shot past Shrimpers goalkeeper Nathan Bishop from a narrow angle in the 84th minute.

It could have been worse for Sol Campbell’s side, as Dover forward Jai Reason clipped the bar with a curling effort from the edge of the area in the closing stages.

More to follow.
