St Mirren secured their Scottish Premiership safety with a dramatic penalty shootout win over Dundee United in the play-off final.

Nicky Clark’s spot kick put United ahead in the first half but Danny Mullen levelled immediately in Paisley.

The game descended into a tense and turgid affair before Duckens Nazon was shown a straight red in extra-time.

United missed all four spot kicks with Paul McGinn and Mihai Popescu converting for Saints.

There was little between the two sides during Thursday’s goalless first leg at Tannadice and it was the same here, but both Kyle McAllister and Nazon spurned chances for the hosts as the clock ticked down.

The result means St Mirren will remain in the top flight for another year while Robbie Neilson’s United will spend a fourth term in the Championship.

More to follow.
