Why Sir Alex Ferguson thinks Liverpool will beat Man City to the Premier League title

Former Burnley and Stoke striker Jonathan Walters has revealed why Sir Alex Ferguson feels as though Liverpool are set to bring an end to their Premier League title-drought this season.

Liverpool vs Man City

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are currently embroiled in one of the most-memorable title fights in Premier League history.

On the back of the latest round of English top-flight fixtures over the weekend, which saw both the Sky Blues and Reds pick up victories, Liverpool hold the advantage in the race for supremacy once more, sitting 2 points clear of 2nd-placed City.

Crucially, however, the Manchester outfit hold a game in hand over Liverpool.

As such, if City do manage to secure 3-point hauls in their remaining 5 fixtures, they will retain the club’s Premier League crown.

This, however, will be easier said than done.

Of the champions’ remaining outings, they still have to take on Tottenham and, crucially, Manchester rivals United, both of whom are in the midst of a 4-way battle for a Champions League berth.

‘Liverpool are going to win it’

And it is the latter of these fixtures which one Red Devils’ legend feels as though will eventually prove decisive in the title-fight.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 LIVE’s Football Daily podcast, former Irish international John Walters opened up on a conversation between he and former Burnley teammate Phil Bardsley (who plied his trade at Old Trafford during the early years of his career).

And, during their chat, Bardsley revealed that, in a separate conversation between he and Sir Alex Ferguson, the United legend revealed his opinion that his former side will take points from City in their meeting later this month, in turn opening the door for Liverpool to clinch the title:

‘I was chatting with Phil Bardsley and I’m going to drop a name here… He was sat with Sir Alex Ferguson.’

‘He sat with him and he thinks Liverpool are going to win it.’

‘He thinks Liverpool because he thinks United will get something out of the City game.’
