The Hornets captain received a straight red card for an elbow against Lucas Torreira.

Unai Emery reveals what he said to Deeney

Deeney had plenty to say about his dismissal.

The Watford striker complained to referee Craig Pawson about the call. He argued against the red card, saying “what is that for?”

Deeney also exchanged words with Unai Emery as he exited the pitch.

After the game, the Arsenal manager was asked to reveal what Deeney said. Emery told the media:

He said to me something. I can’t say to him… I don’t know. It’s not important [what he said].

I didn’t listen to him really. I only answered to him, ‘I don’t know’.

Javi Gracia complains about Deeney’s red card

Watford manager Javi Gracia defended Deeney after the game.

Gracia believed the referee made a mistake sending his striker off:

I respect the referee’s decision, but I don’t agree. It is a yellow but never a red.

Troy doesn’t need to explain to me anything I could see the contact with his arm, never his elbow.

Troy is very sad; it was an important game for us; he knew it. The sending off was very tough for us.

I am very proud of my players. We did everything. For Ben, all my players make mistakes — me as well.
