Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil & Germany

Arsenal star Mesut Ozil is in the spotlight in Germany this weekend for non-footballing reasons.

2018 was a watershed moment for Ozil on the international scene.

Prior to the World Cup, Ozil was pictured with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

While Man City’s Ilkay Gundogan was also at the same event, Ozil was singled out for criticism in the German press.

After Germany flopped in Russia, Ozil announced his international retirement.

Ozil asks Recep Tayyip Erdogan to be his best man

According to Bild, Ozil has asked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to be his best man at his wedding.

Ozil is set to marry Amine Gülşe this summer.

The Arsenal star met Erdogan this weekend at the Atatürk Airport in Istanbul.

Ozil was seen handing a wedding invitation to Erdogan. Bild report:

The newspaper “Hürriyet” writes that Ozil and Amine met Erdogan on Friday…

At the end of the conversation Ozil presented his wedding invitation – and even asked Erdogan to become his best man. Sounds absurd – but is quite possible!

Cue the backlash

Whether or not the ‘best man’ story is true, Ozil has been criticised by German politician Cem Özdemir:

Everyone can invite whoever they want to their wedding. Of course this also applies to Mesut Ozil.

But former and active national players are role models and they must ask whether they can do justice to that.

If they indulge autocrats who enrich themselves at the expense of their country and put dissenters in dungeons to disappear, I think that is inappropriate.
