Juventus boss Allegri on possibility of Cristiano Ronaldo being banned for CL semi-finals

Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri has this afternoon shut down suggestions that Cristiano Ronaldo could be hit with a European ban, on the back of his controversial celebration versus Atletico Madrid during the week.

Juventus vs Atletico

Juve welcomed Atleti to the Allianz Stadium on Tuesday night, in the second-leg of the Champions League last-16 showdown between the clubs.

Visitors Atletico headed into the matchup as overwhelming favourites to book their spot in the tournament’s quarter-finals, on the back of their dominant and thoroughly-deserved 2-0 first-leg win at the Wanda Metropolitano 3 weeks ago.

Jose Jimenez and Diego Godin did the damage in Madrid, striking the latest blow to Juventus’ hopes of clinching their first Champions League crown in over 20 years.

Juve turn it around

However, what subsequently unfolded over the 90 minutes in Turin 4 nights ago saw the Bianconeri secure a comeback for the ages.

After seeing a 3rd-minute strike from Giorgio Chiellini ruled out by referee Bjorn Kuipers, Juve went on to take the lead on the night just short of the half-hour mark, as Cristiano Ronaldo buried a back-post header beyond Jan Oblak, following a pinpoint delivery from Federico Bernardeschi:

And Ronaldo was back at it again to level the aggregate score shortly after the interval, with goal-line technology having played a crucial role in confirming that the 34-year-old’s header had in fact crossed the line, despite the best efforts of Oblak:

Juve were running Atletico ragged all over the pitch, with Diego Simeone’s men having looked absolutely shell-shocked throughout proceedings.

And the relentlessness of the hosts eventually saw the Bianconeri add their tie-clinching 3rd four minutes from time, as the irrepressible Federico Bernardeschi was adjudged to have been felled in the Atletico box, allowing man of the hour Ronaldo to step up and rifle home the ensuing spot-kick, in the process booking Juventus’ place in the Champions League’s final-8:

‘Absolutely not’

However, on the back of the dust settling following a momentous evening for all associated with Juventus, a number of worrying reports have circulated throughout the European media, suggesting that Cristiano Ronaldo could be hit with a European ban.

The claims come on the back of Ronaldo mocking Diego Simeone’s ‘cojones’ celebration at the Allianz Stadium on Tuesday night, with Mundo Deportivo and more having reported this morning that Atletico could request a UEFA investigation into the incident.

If Juventus’ star man was found guilty of aiming his celebration towards the travelling Atleti fans, he could, in theory, face a ban for the Old Lady’s Champions League quarter-final tie with Ajax.

One individual, though, who appears fully confident that no such punishment will be forthcoming is Juve boss Max Allegri.

As per Football-Italia, when questioned on the possibility of Ronaldo being hit with a ban during a press conference earlier today, Allegri explained:

‘Absolutely not. I think everyone celebrated their own way on the field and in the stands. I saw nothing strange. Just a celebration. There won’t be a ban.’
