In the case that English sides secure both the Champions League and Europa League titles this season, 6 Premier League outfits would not be eligible to qualify for next season’s edition of the Champions League.

Spurs vs City, United vs Barca

The draws for the quarter-finals of Europe’s two premiere club competitions were held this morning.

And the impressive showings of clubs from the Premier League in Europe to this point in the campaign meant that 6 sides from the English top-flight discovered their respective fates.

First up, the Champions League draw saw Manchester City and Tottenham pitted against one another, Liverpool handed a tie with Porto, and Manchester United faced with the tough task of pushing past Barcelona.

The Europa League draw, meanwhile, saw Arsenal dealt a mouthwatering tie with Napoli, and Chelsea pitted against Slavia Prague:

Premier League ramifications

Amid the successful European campaigns being enjoyed by the Premier League’s top-6, questions have been raised by some fans, pertaining to whether glory in both the Champions League and Europa League could see as many as 6 English clubs take their place in next season’s Champions League.

However, such an outcome is not possible.

In the case that sides from the Premier League do take home both European titles on offer this season (assuming that the Champions League winners secure a top-4 berth), either Arsenal or Chelsea would take the place of the club who finish 4th in the English top-flight in the Champions League next season.

This is of course only the case if the Europa League winners finish outside of the top-4.
