Why Mauro Icardi is no longer Inter Milan’s captain

Mauro Icardi & Inter Milan

In a shock announcement on Wednesday, Inter Milan have confirmed that Mauro Icardi is no longer their club captain.

Inter taken the armband away from Icardi and handed it to goalie Samir Handanovic.

Inter offered no explanation for their decision.

Why is Icardi no longer the captain?

In knee-jerk reaction to the Icardi captaincy move is to look towards the transfer market.

The 25-year-old Argentine has long been rumoured to be thinking about a San Siro exit.

Icardi is under contract with Inter until 2021, and there’s been no movement on talks over a new contract extension.

At Inter, Icardi has often been the best player in an underperforming side.

Indeed, while Inter were in the Champions League this season, that’s the first time Icardi had competed in world football’s premier club competition.
