Liverpool boost: Jurgen Klopp confirms Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s return to training

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has this evening confirmed the return of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to first-team training.

Liverpool vs Bayern Munich

The Reds’ squad travelled to Marbella for a training camp earlier today, ahead of their upcoming clash with Bayern Munich.

Liverpool are set to welcome the German champions to Anfield this day next week, in the first-leg of the high-profile Champions League last-16 tie between the clubs.

Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League table-toppers head into proceedings buoyed by their impressive showing en route to a 3-0 win over Bournemouth at the weekend.

Sadio Mane, Gini Wijnaldum and Mohamed Salah were all on target for the Merseysiders, ahead of a rare 10-day break from competitive fixtures.

Lovren crocked

However, in a blow to the Reds on the personnel front, news emerged earlier today that Dejan Lovren had not travelled with the rest of the Liverpool squad to their training retreat in Marbella, after picking up an injury.

During an interview with this afternoon, Jurgen Klopp explained:

‘Dejan is not here and Joe [Gomez] is not here.’

‘That’s never a good sign, I would say, but we will try everything to make Dejan available for Munich.’

‘It will be a tight race,’

The Ox returns to training

In some much-needed positive news for the Anfield outfit on the injury-front, though, one player who did make the trip to Spain was long-term absentee Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The English international has been sidelined since last April, after rupturing cruciate ligaments during a Champions League semi-final clash with Roma.

However, the Ox took another huge step towards making his long-awaited return to the pitch today, after taking part in Liverpool’s first-team training session this morning.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official website a short time ago, Jurgen Klopp revealed:

‘The boys had to do a bit of core work, passing and the rondos and it’s nice [they could be involved].’

‘These things Ox can do, and Rhian can do, and Ben can do and Nat Phillips could do most of them. That’s all good.’

‘This afternoon they will have to do their own stuff again and hopefully we can integrate them step by step.’
