Hazards backs Kante in new role

At Leicester City and at Chelsea under Antonio Conte, N’Golo Kante was perhaps the best holding midfielder in the world.

So, when Maurizio Sarri took over as Chelsea boss, you would have expected Sarri to keep Kante in his preferred role.

However, Sarri would opt to sign Jorginho from former club Napoli and play the Italian in the holding midfield spot.

Given Kante’s quality, Sarri could not exactly leave the Frenchman out of the starting line-up.

This forced Sarri to play Kante in a much more attacking role than he is used to.

Kante has done a decent job in his new position, scoring three and assisting four in 25 league games but it is clear in some games he is struggling.

Despite Kante sometimes looking out of place in a more attacking role, Eden Hazard has backed him to adapt to his new role and labelled the midfielder one of the best in the world:

“N’Golo’s a clever guy, one of the best in his position, maybe the best in the world. N’Golo now plays six months in the different position.

“He needs to adapt. When we win, everyone will say, ‘Yes, he plays in his [best] position, and if we lose everyone will say, ‘No, he needs to go a bit behind’. Depends only on the result.” As quoted by the Evening Standard.

Chelsea could drop out of Champions League spot

While Kante is a lot more defensive minded than is often needed in his new role, that may actually benefit Chelsea this weekend.

That is because the Blues face a very tough trip to Manchester City.

City are currently top of the table and have scored 68 in 25 league games. So, it is likely Chelsea will have to defend a lot on Sunday, an area Kante excels in.

However, if Chelsea lose on Sunday, they could move as low as 6th in the table due to Arsenal only being three points behind them.
