Atletico Madrid’s fans targeted Thibaut Courtois with toy rats ahead of Madrid derby

Supporters of Atletico Madrid this evening took aim at Real Madrid shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois in rather bizarre fashion, ahead of the Madrid derby.

Atletico vs Real

2 of Spanish football’s 3 biggest clubs reignited their rivalry at the Wanda Metropolitano a short time ago, in a crucial clash in the race for the La Liga title.

While Real have long been considered as heavy-outsiders to reclaim the Spanish top-flight crown, a superb recent run of form on the part of the European champions meant that Los Blancos headed into this evening’s derby aware that a victory would see them leapfrog their inner-city rivals and move to within 5 points of Liga leaders Barcelona.

An Atletico win, meanwhile, would have seen Diego Simeone’s men just 3 points adrift of Barca, ahead of the Blaugrana’s tough trip to the Basque country tomorrow night to take on Athletic Bilbao.

Bale seals it

In the end, though, it was Real who emerged victorious from a testy affair, to keep their recent revival alive.

Casemiro put Los Merengues ahead with a quarter of an hour on the clock, before Antoine Griezmann levelled things up 10 minutes later.

Real took the lead once more on the stroke of half-time, though, courtesy of Sergio Ramos.

And the visitors put the finishing touches on a morale-boosting victory 15 minutes from time, when substitute Gareth Bale got in on the act with a trademark finish of his own:

Courtois targeted

Real’s 3-point haul at the Wanda Metropolitano, meanwhile, will no doubt have tasted extra sweet for one of Los Blancos’ stars in particular.

The player in question is shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois.

Courtois’ move to the Bernabeu from Chelsea last summer was met with widespread disapproval on the part of Atletico’s fans, with the Belgian having spent 3 successful years with the Rojiblancos between 2011 and 2014.

And, on Courtois’ first visit to his former stomping ground as a Real player, Atletico’s fans made it abundantly clear that they have not yet forgiven the 26-year-old for what has evidently been deemed as a betrayal.

Hours before kick-off, it came to light that sections of the Atletico faithful had defaced a plaque outside the Metropolitano, installed as a memento for Courtois’ 100th-appearance with the club:

And fans of Los Colchoneros didn’t stop there, with Courtois having subsequently been pelted with toy rats as he took to the pitch to warm-up ahead of kick-off:

He who laughs last…

But, when all was said and done, it was Real, and Courtois in particular, who had the last laugh…
