Man United beat Tottenham 1-0

Manchester United laid down a marker at Wembley on Sunday as they beat Tottenham 1-0.

Marcus Rashford, who has looked full of confidence since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Old Trafford arrival, beat Hugo Lloris with a clinical right-footed shot.

The win lifted Man United onto 41 points, which is the same as Arsenal.

Tottenham are third in the division, while any residual title hopes must surely now be extinguished.

Man United’s Tottenham win is good for Spurs

On the BBC website on Monday, journalist Phil McNulty makes the case why Man United’s win over Tottenham is good for Spurs.

The Spurs sliver lining revolves around the ongoing question of who’ll be Man United’s next full-time manager.

Mauricio Pochettino has long been named as United’s preferred option. But could Ole Gunnar Solskjaer get the job instead?

McNulty made the following point:

There must still be serious reservations at this early stage about whether Solskjaer will be handed the reins long-term but wins like this, built on a positive tactical platform from a resurgent team before a truly exceptional display of goalkeeping from David de Gea, will strengthen his case.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer vs Mauricio Pochettino

Solskjaer is now favourite with Ladbrokes to get the Man United job on a permanent basis.

After claiming his sixth straight victory as interim boss, the bookies slashed odds to just 6/4 that the United legend is still in charge on the opening day of next season.

That means he’s leapfrogged Mauricio Pochettino (now 7/4) into favouritism, with Zinedine Zidane third in the betting at 8/1.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “If Sunday’s game was an audition for the permanent Man United job then Ole passed with flying colours, and that’s exactly what the odds suggest.”

Next Man United Manager

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – 6/4
Mauricio Pochettino – 7/4
Zinedine Zidane – 8/1
Max Allegri – 10/1
Gareth Southgate – 12/1
Antonio Conte – 20/1
Diego Simeone – 20/1
Laurent Blanc – 20/1
