Eden Hazard slammed for ‘disrespecting the false nine role’

Chelsea 2 – Newcastle 1

Chelsea picked up maximum points against newcastle on Saturday in the Premier League.

Pedro opened for the Blues with a lovely lob, however a Ciaran Clark header pulled Newcastle level.

Willian was the match-winner for the Blues in the second half with a superb curler into the far corner.

Eden Hazard, false nine

Belgian star Eden Hazard was once again deployed in the false nine role for Chelsea against the Magpies.

Maurizio Sarri has been well-documented for successfully using Dries Mertens in that position at Napoli.

But is Hazard performing as Mertens did? Is Hazard more effective in a wide left role?

‘Disrespecting the false nine role’

In his column in the Times on Monday, Tony Cascarino has torn into Hazard.

Cascarino believes that Hazard was disrespectful in the Newcastle game:

I went to Chelsea on Saturday and Eden Hazard disrespected the false No 9 role. He was flicking everything that came his way with no regard for team play. He’s normally the one running on to the flicks but when you are asked to do a job for the team, do it properly.

He’s a wonderful player but I wasn’t impressed, it was like a Harlem Globetrotters approach. There’s no way it’s a long-term solution for Maurizio Sarri. They need to get a central striker in quickly.

Tony Cascarino backlash

Cascarino’s comments have spread on social media.
