Lionel Messi & Cristiano Ronaldo set to watch Copa Libertadores final together at Bernabeu

As per a report from Spanish outlet AS, long-time rivals Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will take in the Copa Libertadores final second-leg side-by-side at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Boca Juniors vs River Plate

One of, if not the fiercest rivalry in world football has been renewed in Argentina over the last couple of weeks.

After both Boca Juniors and River Plate successfully navigated their respective paths through the Copa Libertadores, the Buenos-Aires-based rivals were pitted against each other in the competition’s finale for the first time in history.

The first-leg between the two sides saw a thrilling 2-2 draw played out at Boca’s Bombonera on the 11th of November, in the midst of a tense atmosphere.

Harrowing scenes

However, the second-leg clash, due to have taken place almost two weeks ago, was eventually postponed, following shocking scenes of violence on the streets of Buenos Aires, and an attack on Boca’s team bus:

As such, last week, CONMEBOL (the South American Football Confederation) announced that the decision had been made to host the Copa Libertadores final second-leg outside of Argentina, with Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu having subsequently been selected as the ideal venue.

And, as per the aforementioned reports stemming from Spain this evening, world football’s two biggest stars look set to take in the clash alongside one another on Sunday evening:

According to AS:

‘Madrid chief Florentino Pérez is planning to sit Ronaldo and Messi together in the presidential box, in a gesture of respect to the two players who have dominated the world game over the past decade, with the Spanish FA (RFEF) and CONMEBOL, South American football’s governing body, both in agreement with the idea.’
