Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny dealt setback in injury return

Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny was this evening dealt his latest injury blow, as the Frenchman continues his attempts to make a return to first-team football.

Koscielny crocked

Koscielny, 33, has been on the books of Arsenal for 8 years now, having made the move to the Emirates from Ligue 1 outfit Lorient in 2010.

And the stopper has since gone on to establish himself as an absolute mainstay in the Gunners’ backline, racking up over 300 appearances for the capital giants, as well as notching an impressive 24 goals.

However, Koscielny has not featured for Arsenal since the beginning of May, when a Europa League semi-final clash with Atletico Madrid saw the Guingamp youth product rupture the achilles tendon in his ankle.

The Frenchman subsequently went on to heartbreakingly miss his country’s World Cup triumph in Russia this summer. And Koscielny is also yet to feature at club level thus far this season.

Arsenal setback

However, the veteran has been making considerable progress in his attempts to return to first-team action over recent weeks.

Koscielny even captained Arsenal’s U23’s during a clash with Derby County last week.

And the stopper followed up his first appearance on the pitch in over 6 months with a further showing tonight.

Arsenal’s U21’s took on Portsmouth in a Checkatrade Trophy clash, eventually falling to a 2-1 defeat at Fratton Park.

However, there were potentially far more telling consequences for the club as a whole than their youth side’s elimination from the competition.

These consequences came in the form of Koscielny being forced to limp off with an injury concern 10 minutes from time:

It remains to be seen whether the Frenchman’s problem is just a minor setback or something more serious, with an update likely to be forthcoming from Arsenal tomorrow.
