Man City 6 – Shakhtar Donetsk 0

For the second match in succession, Manchester City have scored six goals.

Last weekend in the Premier League, Southampton were put to the sword in a 6-1 win for the Sky Blues.

City went one better against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League as Pep Guardiola’s side kept a clean sheet in a 6-0 victory.

Gabriel Jesus ended his goal drought with a hat-trick against the Ukrainians.

David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez scored the other goals.

Raheem Sterling & his penalty

The big talking point after the game centred on Man City’s second goal.

Gabriel Jesus converted from the spot after Raheem Sterling won a penalty.

However the penalty should never have been awarded, as Sterling went down in the box without any contact from a Shakhtar player.

Pep Guardiola remembers James Milner & Liverpool

Should Sterling have told the officials at the time that the penalty was unfair on Shakhtar?

Maybe, but can football fans really expect footballers to behave in that way?

When the topic of Sterling’s penalty was posed to Guardiola, the Man City boss openly admitted the penalty should never have been given.

Guardiola, however, defended Sterling with two lines of argument.

Firstly he shifted the focus onto UEFA for failing to implement VAR in the Champions League this season.

Secondly, the Man City boss recalled when his side suffered an injustice against Liverpool in the Champions League last season.

In last season’s quarter-final, Leroy Sane had a goal incorrectly disallowed against Liverpool.

On that occasion, the officials all failed to spot that, although Sane was standing in an offside position as he shot past Loris Karius, he received the ball from Liverpool man James Milner.
