Trent Alexander-Arnold labels Liverpool’s Joe Gomez a ‘mini Virgil van Dijk’

England and Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has been speaking to about his team-mate, Joe Gomez.

Alexander-Arnold has been full of praise for Gomez and has compared him to his defensive partner, Virgil van Dijk.

‘It’s like he’s a mini Virgil at times!’

When speaking about Gomez, Alexander-Arnold told Liverpool’s official website:

“He [Gomez] is showing this season he is a top player.

“At a young age, he’s one of the best in his position in the league. That takes some doing, so that’s credit to him especially with the setbacks he has had.

“He has an immense hunger and drive to keep succeeding, going forward and getting better. You see that every day in training with the way he applies himself.

“The relationship he has forged with Virgil has really helped him. He probably looks up to Virgil as a bit of a role model. It’s like he’s a mini Virgil at times!

“There’s probably a bit more of a difference from last season in terms of how we’re defensively organised.

“We’re not conceding as many goals and we’re still getting results, sometimes grinding them out.

“A win is a win at the end of the day and we’ve shown this year we can win in different ways.”

Liverpool’s much-improved defence

One of Liverpool’s main problems last season was their shaky defence.

However, since purchasing Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in the summer, the Reds defence has improved drastically.

Now, this season, the pairing of van Dijk and Gomez at centre-back has been key to Liverpool’s solid start.

Gomez has featured in all eight of Liverpool’s Premier League games this season.

In those eight games, Liverpool have kept five clean sheets and conceded just three.

This is the joint lowest goals conceded in the league and is a big reason why Liverpool are currently joint top of the Premier League.
