DeAndre Yedlin on settling in at Newcastle after tough time at Sunderland

DeAndre Yedlin moved to Newcastle in August of 2016 from Tottenham for a fee of around £5.1 million.

Before moving to Newcastle, Yedlin was on loan to Newcastle’s neighbours, Sunderland.

‘It kind of feels like I’ve settled here, and that’s a great feeling’

However, after settling in at Newcastle, Yedlin has revealed the tough times he went through at both Sunderland and Tottenham.

Speaking about his time with all three clubs, Yedlin stated:

“It kind of feels like I’ve settled here, and that’s a great feeling. A lot of people don’t realise that that can play a huge part in your performance and mentally.

“In a way, yes I am lucky. In a way, without those opportunities [I have had throughout my life], I don’t get the chance.

“But you also have to look at the fact that if you don’t take those opportunities and, if you don’t make the best out of them, then I’m not where I am today.

“And I think that’s what my career has kind of been built off of; taking the opportunity when I need to.

“Obviously people see that I express myself, and sometimes people don’t like that. But I think the Newcastle fans do.

“They know that I always give 110 per cent on the pitch, no matter what. I’ll do the dirty work for every single one of my team-mates if that means that we can win.

“I think London was the first time in my career where I really went through a hard time.

“Obviously I wasn’t playing, I was away from my family, I was in a massive city like London where you can get lost – both literally and mentally, you can just get lost.

“I didn’t play for about two months [with Sunerland]. I was just training and I started getting that depressed feeling again, that rock-bottom feeling again.

“And I said: ‘No, I’m not going through this. I need to do something to get out of this.”

Winless Newcastle

While Yedlin seems to be enjoying life at Newcastle under Rafa Benitez, that does not change the fact Newcastle have had a horrible start to the season.

Newcastle began the season with a narrow 2-1 loss to Tottenham.

They would then draw with Cardiff before going on to lose to Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Yedlin would earn an assist vs Chelsea and score vs City.

Newcastle then lost to Arsenal, drew with Crystal Palace, lost to Leicester and lost to Manchester United despite being 2-0 up.

The Magpies next game is a must win vs Brighton.
