Macclesfield equalled an all-time English league record of 36 consecutive games without a victory after falling to defeat at Tranmere.

Adam Buxton’s free-kick hit the post as Rovers came close to a first-half goal.

The hosts should have led when James Norwood was thwarted by Rhys Taylor, while Michael Rose curled against the inside of the post for Macclesfield.

Tranmere’s goal came after Connor Jennings squared for Harvey Gilmour to find the bottom corner from 18 yards.

Jennings struck wide when well-placed as Rovers chased a second, but Micky Mellon’s side rise to fourth with a third consecutive League Two victory.

Macclesfield, meanwhile, equal Derby’s winless run of 36 games between September 2007 and August 2008 – although theirs spans seven years, dating back to when they were relegated in 2012.

The Silkmen sacked manager Mark Yates on Monday, with assistants Danny Whitaker and Neil Howarth taking charge at Prenton Park.
