Reds prospect Nick Senzel will undergo surgery on his left elbow to remove bone spurs, Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. He’ll miss the next four to six weeks, which will keep him out of the Arizona Fall League where he was expected to get some playing time in the outfield.

Senzel, 23, is the Reds’ No. 1 prospect, per MLB Pipeline. He has played mostly third base throughout his professional career, but played some second base and shortstop this past season and was expected to learn the outfield in preparation for 2019.

Senzel’s 2018 season was interrupted when he tore a tendon in his right index finger early in the summer. He finished having hit .310/.378/.509 with six home runs and 25 RBI in 193 plate appearances.

The Reds will almost certainly call up Senzel in 2019, but the starting jobs in the infield are currently spoken for, which is why the club was hoping to add the outfield to his repertoire.
