John Terry’s Aston Villa role already in question as Dean Smith hires a number 2
Aston Villa appoint Dean Smith
Aston Villa made the announcement on Wednesday night.
After rumours linked Thierry Henry and Rui Faria with the Aston Villa hotseat, Dean Smith agreed to leave his post at Brentford to become Villa’s new manager.
Smith replaces Steve Bruce in the dugout.
Smith hasn’t arrived in the Midlands by himself. Chelsea icon John Terry, who played for Villa last season, has been appointed as an assistant coach at Villa Park.
Moreover, Villa have hired Jesus Garcia Pitarch to be their sporting director.
We are delighted to announce the appointments of Dean Smith as our new Head Coach, John Terry as Assistant Coach and Jesus Garcia Pitarch as Sporting Director ✍️

John Terry’s Aston Villa role already in question
On Thursday, doubts have already started to bubble up about John Terry’s precise role at Aston Villa.
That’s after Dean Smith has decided to bring Brentford’s assistant head coach Richard O’Kelly with him at Villa Park to be his number two.
The Times have confirmed that O’Kelly “will be Villa’s de facto No 2 rather than Terry.” So what’s Terry going to do at the club? The Times report:
Terry had been tipped to take over as No 2 even before Smith was appointed and had also been mentioned as a candidate to be the manager, now his role appears to be diminishing.
Terry’s willingness to act as an assistant to Smith, who has never played or managed in the top flight, (is a surprise), particularly given that he coveted the job himself.
For the record, John Terry was unable to become Aston Villa’s manager right.
#AVFC won’t be able to appoint #Terry as manager because he hasn’t got his A licence coaching badge yet…though I’m told he could complete the course within a month. His presence at #cfc‘s Uefa youth league game yesterday was part of his studies.
