Athletic Bilbao 1 – Real Madrid 1

Real Madrid’s perfect start to the La Liga season is over.

Los Blancos dropped two points on Saturday night in a 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao.

Iker Muniain fired Bilbao into the lead just after the half hour mark.

Madrid were improved in the second half, and Isco levelled in the 63rd minute with a rare header.

Toni Kroos & his new Real Madrid role

At the start of the season, new Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui has used Toni Kroos in a new role.

Fans are used to seeing Kroos dovetail with Luka Modric in the middle of the pitch.

But against Bilbao, Kroos started in the number 6 role, in front of the Madrid back four.

There was no place for Brazilian enforcer Casemiro in the Madrid starting XI.

At the break, Casemiro came off the bench and Kroos moved further up the pitch.

Real were significantly better after that, although they still failed to collect three points.

Sergio Ramos on Kroos

After the match, Sergio Ramos was asked about Kroos starting ahead of Casemiro:

That’s a question for the coach, we are dedicated to doing our work and always giving the maximum.

As for Kroos, he also spoke his new role:

I like it. I played there in the first half vs Getafe too and I have more or less the same game & tried to have the ball.

It’s always tough here. We know that from the past years. They press high and aggressive.
