Chelsea & Liverpool’s keepers

Chelsea and Liverpool are the joint Premier League league leaders after five rounds.

Both the Blues and the Reds have five wins from five games.

Chelsea are just above Liverpool on goal difference.

At the back, Chelsea have left in four goals in the league, while Liverpool have only conceded twice.

Of course, both clubs spent huge money in the summer on new goalies.

Liverpool originally broke the transfer record on signing Alisson from Roma. The Brazilian cost the Reds £65m.

However Chelsea soon broke the world record for a goalie when they shelled out £72m to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao.

Graeme Souness on Alisson & Kepa

Almost every weekend, Graeme Souness pens a weekly column in the Sunday Times.

This weekend has seen Souness drop an interesting comment about Alisson and Kepa.

Souness has considered what spending 100 million pounds in today’s transfer market really means. Does that outlay guarantee success? For Souness the answer is ‘no’, as he argued:

Just because you spend £100m, it doesn’t mean you will make that leap from a team in the dogfight to one sitting comfortably. What’s £100m today? Riyad Mahrez cost Manchester City £60m — for a squad player who won’t play every week.

Liverpool and Chelsea spent around £70m on goalkeepers but I’m not sure they have improved the overall quality of their squad.

You’d suspect many Chelsea and Liverpool fans would disagree with Souness.

Souness vs West Ham’s Manuel Pellegrini

The main topic for Souness is to consider how Manuel Pellegrini is getting on at West Ham.

The Hammers, who take on Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday, are they only side in the division still on zero points.

Souness has aired his fears that Pellegrini and West Ham don’t mesh:

I’m not sure that Pellegrini is a good fit for West Ham as manager.

Although Pellegrini has a decent knowledge of the Premier League from his three seasons at City, West Ham made a mistake in getting rid of a British manager who knows the league inside out and is up to speed with nearly every player in it.
