Martin Keown claims Leroy Sane must embrace Man City battle with Mahrez

Sane not a fan of competition?

Former Arsenal star Martin Keown has claimed that Leroy Sane must embrace a competition with Riyad Mahrez at Manchester City to keep his spot.

The German forward may be one of the best young talents in football but hasn’t had it all his way recently.

That is because he was dropped for the game against Newcastle due to his focus.

His attitude has also come into question with the German national team.

Leroy Sane vs Riyad Mahrez

Now, following a big money move for Riyad Mahrez, Sane has his work cut out to get in the team.

Though, Martin Keown has claimed in his latest Daily Mail Q&A column he should relish that challenge instead of run from it.

‘Sane does not seem to have coped well with Riyad Mahrez’s arrival. He clearly sees Mahrez as a threat to his position,’ he explained.

‘He needs to embrace that challenge. When Arsenal bought Sol Campbell, I almost went into fight mode to keep hold of my place.

‘I adopted the mindset that I should be in the team.

‘Sane is a better player than Mahrez but he is struggling with the competition. Let’s not write him off, though.

‘Remember, this is a player who started the season on the bench and finished it as the young player of the year.

‘Now the Champions League has arrived, Sane will have enough games to prove himself to Guardiola.’
