Derby County loanee Mason Mount admitted that he rejected a move to Southampton due to his Portsmouth allegiance.

The 19-year-old had three clubs chasing his signature and he had the choice of joining Chelsea, Southampton or Portsmouth.

Having previously been a Pompey season-ticket holder, Mount revealed a move to Southampton was totally out of the question.

Mount: “It was tough to turn down Pompey – I was a season-ticket holder”

On Monday, Mount scored the winning goal on his full debut for England under-21s against Latvia.

The midfielder is one of the hottest prospects in the Three Lions’ youth set-up and is currently on loan with Derby County.

On loan from Chelsea, Mount has revealed that prior to his move to Stamford Bridge, he rejected an offer from Southampton.

Having grown up supporting Portsmouth, moving to their South Coast rivals was an easy decision to turn down.

Mount told the Sun:

“It was tough to turn down Pompey.

“I was a massive fan, season-ticket holder and grew up watching them.

“Southampton wasn’t as tough!

“I went there and I had to wear the kit and just didn’t want to in training.

“No disrespect but I am a Pompey boy! I found it too hard wearing that kit.

“It was hard turning Pompey down but the difference between them and Chelsea was massive.

“Chelsea were a year or two ahead of what Pompey were doing with the facilities and the boys, who were so competitive.”
