Stan Collymore vs Jose Mourinho

In his first column in the Mirror since the start of the 2018-19 Premier League season, Stan Collymore has turned on Man United boss Jose Mourinho.

It’s worth remembering from the outset that Man United won their opening fixture.

The Red Devils beat Leicester 2-1 at Old Trafford on Friday night.

And while Man United may not have hit the high notes under Jose Mourinho’s tenure, they have won the Europa League.

Further, Man United finished above Tottenham and Liverpool last season. That said, Man City won the league with a 19 point lead over United.

‘It’s better to play for Liverpool or Spurs’

Collymore has constructed the argument that Man United are in trouble because of Mourinho.

When considering how Man United operated in the summer transfer market, Collymore has argued Mourinho may have turned some stars away from a move.

Adopting hyperbolic language to stress his point, Collymore argued the following:

Right now there isn’t a poorer fit of manager and club in the Premier League, arguably not anywhere in Europe.

I just don’t believe players look at Mourinho these days and think, “Yes, I’m desperate to play for him”.

If there was a choice of managers, I’d want to play for – in terms of the privilege of playing for them – it would be Pep Guardiola, Mauricio Pochettino and Jurgen Klopp, for starters.

Then it would be people like Slavisa Jokanovic and Nuno Espirito Santos.

Really?! Players would rather move to Fulham or Wolves than switch to Man United? That seems like a stretch…

For the record, Man United made three summer signings.

Fred joined from Shakhtar Donetsk, Diogo Dalot signed on from Porto, while Lee Grant switched from Stoke as a back-up keeper.
