Spurs’ Jan Vertonghen admits he’s now a fan of technology in football

Converted

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has admitted that he now believes in technology in football following his goal against Newcastle.

The Belgian scored Spurs’ first goal of the new season when he managed to bundle a ball over the line but only just.

It took goalline technology to confirm that it was actually a goal.

Spurs conceded after that after Joselu scored but soon got back ahead through Dele Alli.

The game ended 2-1 and that saw Spurs take all three points back down south.

A Believer

Now, Vertonghen has admitted that he is now a believer in technology in football.

“I haven’t scored in the Premier League for a while, so I was happy to score,” he explained, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

‘Davinson had a great touch with the first header – and there could have been another one later because from the other side, he had a first touch again, but I didn’t make that run again.

‘I didn’t expect it to be in at first. The goalkeeper made a great save and I was happy with the technology. I’m not a big fan of technology in football, but now I am!

‘You go a bit blind and you hope for some contact, and I had it. I thought, “Okay”, and then everything might have been in slow motion.

‘Hugo (Lloris) was standing there in slo-mo and then it hit the bar and it fell the right way for us, so in the end we were a bit lucky.’

Newcastle & Tottenham have injury problems

The clash wasn’t all positive for Tottenham.

That is because they have suffered some injuries, much like their counterparts on Saturday.

Both sides sustained injuries to their key players who could now be set for a spell on the sidelines.
