‘Has he retired from club football too?’ Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil slated online following display vs Man City
Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has been singled out for heavy abuse online this evening, in the aftermath of his dismal showing during the Gunners’ clash with Manchester City.
Matchup
The two sides went head to head at the Emirates in a 4pm kick-off, in the final fixture of the Premier League’s opening weekend.
The clash marked the competitive debut of new Arsenal boss Unai Emery, while Pep Guardiola’s City were aiming to get their bid to become the first side in history to retain the Premier League title off to a positive start.
On the pitch, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Matteo Guendouzi were handed their full debuts in an Arsenal jersey, while City summer signing Riyad Mahrez was also handed a starting berth for the visitors:

0-2
In the end, a relatively straightforward afternoon’s work for Manchester City saw the Sky Blues emerge with a 2-0 victory in north London, courtesy of strikes from Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva.
Arsenal fans will likely not have been overly disappointed with their side’s first display under the tutelage of Unai Emery, as the Gunners did not look the complete raggedy mess they so often have versus the Premier League’s top clubs over recent seasons at the Emirates today.
Missing man
However, there were a couple of causes for concern for the capital outfit, in particular the performances of Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
The attacking duo lined out on either side of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a fluid front-3, but neither was able to have any effect on the game, with a number of promising attacks and chances having actually broken down at the feet of Ozil.
As such, unsurprisingly, the German has been singled out for heavy abuse online this evening, with some of the highlights below:
Has Özil retired from club football as well?

I knew Ozil retired from International football but when did he retire from Club football???

I know why Özil has retired from International football. But anyone knows why Özil has retired from club football also?

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist. His second-best was convincing someone at Arsenal to give Mesut Ozil £350,000 a week.

David Silva’s had a better game than Ozil and he’s not even in the matchday squad.

Ozil is not a scape goat he’s just SHIT

I can confirm Ozil has not retired, despite not showing up for today’s game against Manchester City.

Ozil decided to become a civil rights activist so we’d forget he’s a fraud

Ederson has created more for Arsenal today than Ozil has. Unreal.
