Aston Villa missed out on Joe Bryan transfer by ’15 minutes’

Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce has revealed that Villa missed out on signing Joe Bryan by as little as 15 minutes.

‘It wasn’t to be’

The defender was close to signing for Villa for around £6m but now Premier League Fulham stole Bryan from Villa at the last minute.

In a recent interview, Bruce stated,

“We were probably 15 minutes too late. Unfortunately he got a call from the Premier League.

“When that happens obviously, financially, the lure of the Premier League, it blew us out the water in terms of salary.

“It wasn’t to be. It is frustrating and disappointing. I would have liked him here. He fits the remit of what we are looking for.

“He came up, had all the medical tests and came back to the training ground.

“In that 15 minutes of coming back from the hospital to here, his agent had the phone call. Fulham didn’t get their No.1 choice.

“To be fair he stayed in the Belfry for a couple of hours but the longer the day went on the more the lure of the Premier League and financial package, made him decide to go to Fulham.

‘If it is not meant to be, it is not meant to be’

“It was painful,

“Listen, if you are in my job, you get used to disappointments. It has happened, it has gone.

“I have done it now a long, long time. When I was younger I would be chewing wasps and wanting to smash everything in sight, kick the cat and the rest of it!

“It is all the work you put in, hour after hour after hour. But if it is not meant to be, it is not meant to be.”

Attacking full-back

Bryan did begin his career with Bristol City. However, he has also enjoyed several loan spells throughout his career.

He spent a season on loan at Bath but only managed to make four appearances and Bryan also spent a season with Plymouth but he only made 10 appearances for them.

For his parent club, Bristol, Bryan has made 229 appearances, in which he has scored 21 and assisted 29.

Bryan is also very versatile. He is naturally a left-back, a spot he has played 96 times throughout his career.

However, he can also play left midfield, right-back, right midfield and even centre mid on a few occasions.

Bryan had a solid 2017/18 season for Bristol, in which he played 48 games, scored seven and assisted three.
