Newcastle United have been dealt a huge injury blow in their Premier League opening day defeat against Tottenham Hotspur as DeAndre Yedlin limped off injured.

The defender suffered a knee injury in the final stages of the game at St James’ Park and looked in clear discomfort as he was assisted off the pitch.

Rafael Benitez, still frustrated from the club’s summer business, will be left bitterly disappointed as his side suffered a blow in both the result and losing a key player.

Yedlin looks set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a potentially serious knee injury in Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat against Spurs.

In the final stages, the United States international landed awkwardly on his knee when challenging with Ben Davies for the ball.

The 25-year-old was assisted off the field and was unable to resume in the action, with the manager confirming that the club are awaiting further news from the doctors.

Tottenham Hotspur’s World Cup semi-finalist were on target for Mauricio Pochettino’s side this afternoon as Jan Vertonghen and Dele Alli helped them claim all three points.

Vertonghen netted his first Premier League goal in five years, as goal-line technology adjudged his header to have crossed the line by a mere 9mm.

The hosts were quick to respond as Joselu rounded off a well-worked move from Newcastle following an excellent Matt Ritchie delivery.

However, Dele Alli restored as he produced a trademark late run into the box to outleap the Magpies’ back-line to turn in Serge Aurier’s cross.

In the second half, Spurs were let off on a number of occasions as new signing Kenedy and Solomon Rondon spurned excellent opportunities.
