Barcelona willing to sell Liverpool target Jasper Cillessen for €30m

Spanish outlet SPORT are today reporting that Barcelona are willing to let Jasper Cillessen leave the club this summer for around €30 million as he is said to be unhappy in Spain and looking for a new challenge.

This is excellent news for Liverpool who have been looking at Cillessen for some time now but were slightly put off by his €60m release clause which Barca now seem willing to ignore.

Experienced shot-stopper

Cillessen is a 29-year-old Dutch keeper who began his senior career in the Netherlands with NEC Nijmegen.

Cillessen made 35 appearances for NEC Nijmegen, keeping seven clean sheets in that time.

The Dutchman would then sign for Eredivisie giants Ajax in 2011 for a fee of just £2.9 million.

While at Ajax Cillessen would make 143 appearances for them, in which he kept an impressive 63 clean sheets.

This excellent shot stopping would earn him a move to FC Barcelona in the summer of 2016 for a fee believed to be around £11.7 million.

However, despite spending two seasons with the Catalonians, Cillessen has played just 21 games for Barcelona. He kept 11 clean sheets in those 21 games.

Cillessen is very much Barca’s back up keeper, though, because in his two seasons in Spain the Dutch keeper has made just two league appearances, with the majority of his appearances coming in the Copa del Rey.

Given that Cillessen still has his best years ahead of him and it is clear he is not going to be starting regularly for Barcelona, he could well be open to a move to Liverpool, if they are willing to pay €30m.

Liverpool spending spree

After losing 3-1 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final and finishing 4th in the Premier League, it was clear Liverpool needed to improve their squad this summer to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United.

And credit where credit is due, Liverpool are certainly looking to do so.

They have already agreed to sign Naby Keita from RB Leipzig earlier this year. The Reds would then sign holding midfielder Fabinho from Monaco for a fee of around £43 million.

It would now also seem Klopp is keen to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, hardly surprising given Karius’s display in the Champions League final, and Cillessen could well be that man.
