Official: Barcelona announce Clement Lenglet signing after paying Sevilla release clause

La Liga giants Barcelona have this afternoon confirmed the signing of Sevilla star Clement Lenglet for 35.9 million Euro.

Impressive performer

Lenglet, a 23-year-old central defender, had been on the books of Sevilla since January of last year, when he made the move to Andalusia from French outfit Nancy for 5 million Euro.

In hindsight, the move proved an absolute masterstroke on the part of Sevilla, with Lenglet having emerged as one of the Spanish top-flight’s most impressive stoppers this past season.

The French youth international appeared in 35 of his side’s 38 La Liga fixtures (33 starts), notching 3 goals and 1 assist in the process, as well as proving a key factor in the club’s surprise run to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Barca links

Unsurprisingly, Lenglet’s stellar showings for Sevilla led to heavy links between the no-nonsense stopper and some of European football’s biggest clubs, with Barcelona the side most persistently touted as a potential destination.

The Blaugrana have long been known to be on the lookout for central defensive reinforcements this summer, with Yerry Mina having so far struggled to impress following his arrival from Palmeiras in January, and Gerard Pique entering the twilight of his career.

As such, Lenglet, with his youth and room for growth, was identified by the board at the Camp Nou as the ideal defensive addition.

Done deal

And, following weeks of intense speculation that the Frenchman’s move to Catalunya was on the verge of completion, Barca have this afternoon finally made the transfer official, via an announcement across the club’s social media accounts and official website:

The Blaugrana activated Lenglet’s 35.9 million Euro release clause to secure the deal, with the stopper having put pen to paper on a 5-year-contract at the Camp Nou.
