Kyle Walker backs Raheem Sterling to score this World Cup
Kyle Walker has backed Raheem Sterling to score for England in the semi-final against Croatia – or in the final should England manage to get there.
The player has been brilliant for England so far, but has failed to score during the World Cup, and has seen plenty of criticism aimed his way – the majority of it deeply unfair.
Walker has come to his defence, and noted that Sterling is getting in the right positions and has shown more than enough to be backed by his critics.
TalkSPORT report he said: “Hopefully he’s saved the big ones [moments] for the last two games.
“I’ve played with Raz for a season now and I can remember at the start of the season people in the papers were saying he needs to add goals to his game, and he returned with 20-odd goals.
“Working with him over the last year, there is no one that puts in harder work than him on the field. He really does try.
“Obviously I just keep telling him to get in these positions, because you’re finding the space, you’re making the clever runs to get there, it’s just the end product that is not coming off at the minute.
“But as we’ve seen in the Premier League, he can finish. It’s just a matter of time and hopefully he’s saved his best for the last two games.”
Sterling has proven for Manchester City that he’s a top class player – and has shown more than enough for England, with Gareth Southgate backing him and Croatia identifying him as one of the danger men to watch out for.
The fact that Sterling creates space for other players seems to have been lost on many of the keyboard warriors on social media, but the fact that Southgate himself has made his admiration for the player clear should be more than enough to convince them.
