Gareth Southgate makes ‘Football’s Coming Home’ song admission
The nation might be sending World Cup songs spiking up the charts, but manager Gareth Southgate has admitted he found it very hard to listen to the iconic Football’s Coming Home for many years, and said that he’s now happy to hear it again – and that while the song has a different feel for him, he’s happy the nation are enjoying it.
The mood of the country has been at fever pitch in recent weeks, and it’s all down to the England side doing so well at the World Cup – something Southgate has of course been instrumental in.
Standard Sport report he said: “Football’s Coming Home is a song I couldn’t even listen to for 20 years, frankly, so for me it has a slightly different feel.
“It’s nice to hear people enjoying it again, anyway.”
While the majority of pundits and players have noted Raheem Sterling has been a key player, there have been some people on social media who have been less than generous about the player – yet Croatia have identified him as a key man to watch out for.
Southgate made it very clear he understands why, and noted just how good Sterling is.
“I’m not surprised that Croatia have identified Raheem as a key player.
“If you look at all of our attacking patterns and the way that our front four have combined and played, he’s been instrumental in that, so I think he’s a player that’s really appreciated by the team.
“I’ve seen lots of ex-players and had lots of messages from ex-players as well who have the same view, so we’re really pleased with his contribution, and his work-rate as well without the ball has been incredible for us.”
