Astros send struggling closer Giles to minors

Ken Giles, who had 34 saves for the world champion Houston Astros last season, was sent down to Triple-A Fresno on Wednesday.

The right-hander has 12 saves and a 4.99 ERA this season after posting a 2.30 ERA last season. He allowed three runs without recording an out in Houston’s 6-5, extra-inning win against Oakland on Tuesday.

Giles’ troubles date back to the playoffs last season. He went 0-2 with a 11.74 ERA in 7 2/3 innings. He allowed five earned runs in 1 2/3 innings in the World Series against the Dodgers.

The Astros recalled LHP Cionel Pérez from Double A Corpus Christi Wednesday.

Brad Peacock and Chris Devenski figure to get most of the save opportunities going forward for Houston, but the Astros also have Will Harris, Hector Rondon and Joe Smith in the bullpen. All have closed out games.

The Astros were 30 games over .500 and had a four-game lead in the AL West entering Wednesday’s play.
