Official: Manchester City announce Riyad Mahrez signing

Manchester City have tonight finally announced the capture of Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City.

Premier League champions City made no secret of the fact that they were on the lookout for attacking reinforcements during the January transfer window, after the MCL injury suffered by striker Gabriel Jesus was added to by Leroy Sane’s ankle ligament damage picked up versus Cardiff City in the FA Cup.

The Sky Blues’ primary target was Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez, but, as was widely covered in the media in one of the biggest January transfer sagas of all-time, the Chilean in the end opted to join City’s fierce rivals Manchester United, after the Red Devils blew the board at the Etihad out of the water with a stunning financial package.

It had looked as though Guardiola and co. had simply admitted defeat in their hunt to bring a new attacker to the club over the week that followed, before links between the Citizens and Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez came to the fore in a major way.

However, much to the frustration of both the Algerian and City, the Foxes rebuffed the rumoured £65 million bid on the part of the since-crowned champions on transfer deadline day, leaving the Sky Blues with no option but to proceed with the (none-too-shabby) attacking options currently plying their trade at the Etihad for the remainder of the campaign.

Massive fee agreed

It had long been suggested that City would reignite their chase of Mahrez over the summer, though, with reports in England over the last couple of months having insisted that they and Leicester were inching closer to agreeing a deal.

And, after claims began to mount over the weekend that a fee of around £60 million had been decided on, further reports yesterday suggested that the transfer was on the verge of completion:

Done deal

As such, following 6 months of rumours and intense negotiations, Manchester City have tonight finally made Mahrez’s signing official, with the Citizens having taken to social media to confirm the news a short time ago:
