Croatia vs England

Croatia and England are a game away form a place in the 2018 World Cup final.

Croatia come into the semi-final against the Three Lions on the back of two labour-intensive matches.

They beat Denmark on penalties in the last-16, before knocking out Russia on penalties in the quarter-finals.

England also need to win a penalty shootout to progress past Colombia. But Gareth Southgate’s men eased into the final four with a comfortable 2-0 win over Sweden.

Croatia were forced into a change in the Russia game.

Atletico Madrid defender Sime Vrsaljko took a blow on his left knee in extra time.

Unable to continue, Vrsaljko was replaced by former Tottenham defender Vedran Corluka.

Now 32, Corluka plays his football in Russia with domestic champions Lokomotiv Moscow.

According to the Evening Standard on Tuesday, Atletico don’t want Vrsaljko to play against England:

(Vrsaljko) remains in discomfort but has made it clear to coach Zlatko Dalic he wants to play in the Luzhniki Stadium on Wednesday.

However, Atleti boss Diego Simeone is insistent that the right-back is not selected due to the risk he could suffer a more serious injury, leading to a potential standoff between club and country.

Vrsaljko injured the same knee in March 2017 playing for Atletico and was ruled out for four months.

You’ve got to suspect that Croatian manager Zlatko Dalic will select Vrsaljko against England, regardless of what Simeone says. He needs to pick his best XI.

Yet news of the defender’s injury is a boost for England, who have pace in attack with players like Raheem Sterling.
