Marc-André ter Stegen endorses Barcelona move for Bayern Munich star
Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has today encouraged his side to attempt to coax Thiago back to the club from Bayern Munich.
Thiago, brother of current Barcelona midfielder Rafinha (who recently returned from a loan at Inter Milan), joined Barca’s youth setup in 2005, before breaking into the club’s first-team in 2009.
However, his emergence coincided with a spell during which one of the greatest midfields of all-time were plying their trade at the Camp Nou, with Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and more having made the pathway to regular minutes a tough one for Thiago.
Nevertheless, during his time spent on the pitch, the technically-gifted midfield dynamo looked a genuine talent, with many fans of the club having earmarked Thiago as the natural heir to Xavi.
As a result, it came as a hammer blow to the Camp Nou faithful when their classy youngster was sold to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich for just 25 million Euro in 2013.
And it is in Germany that Thiago has since truly flourished, with his reunion with Pep Guardiola having allowed the 28-time capped Spanish international to develop into one of the finest all-round midfielders in Europe.
This past season, the Spaniard managed to rack up 7 goals and 2 assists across all competitions, despite struggling with injury for lengthy spells.
However, after admitting last year that Barcelona remains his ‘home’ and that ‘you never know’ if he could make a return to his boyhood club, rumours began to mount that the Blaugrana could look to bring Thiago back to the Camp Nou in the near future, with the recent departure of Andres Iniesta for Japan no doubt set to see the Spanish champions delve into the transfer market for midfield reinforcements this summer.
In addition, the 27-year-old was once again questioned on whether he could depart the Bundesliga over the coming months during an interview with Mundo Deportivo three weeks ago, with Thiago once more refusing to rule out the possibility:
‘Let’s see. I told you I renewed with Bayern last year, but it’s very complicated. Football is very difficult.’
‘I’m very much about enjoying the moment. You don’t have to focus on the future. Now, I’m thinking about the World Cup, I’m living in the present and if a moment comes for you to think about it, I immediately focus on the World Cup.’
‘A special type of player’
And one current Blaugrana star who would be thrilled to see Thiago back plying his trade at the Camp Nou is goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.
Speaking in an interview with SportBild earlier today, the German shot-stopper was questioned on the rumours of Thiago making a return to the club, with ter Stegen having explained:
‘I would like to have Thiago at Barca. His playing style suits us and from our viewpoint he is an interesting player.’
‘Thiago is a special type of player. He definitely would offer us different possibilities. If a transfer happened, it would be brilliant both for him and for us.’
