Fernando Hierro ready for Spain challenge after whirlwind week

‘Nice challenge’

Real Madrid legend Fernando Hierro has opened up on the challenge that will see him try to motivate a Spain side which had its manager sacked on Wednesday.

It was announced just 48 hours before their first group G game that manager Julen Lopetegui had been sacked.

The reasoning being that he had accepted an offer to become the Real Madrid manager next season behind the backs of the Spanish footballing federation.

That angered officials and disappointed the players who had also been told to concentrate on the tournament over their club future.

That lead to his sacking and Real Madrid’s Fernando Hierro was swiftly named as his successor and manager for the World Cup.

Now, he’s been speaking about the challenge of getting his side ready.

Hierro has acknowledged that this is likely to be a challenge but he sees it as ‘an exciting one’.

“It is a nice challenge and an exciting one,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Mirror.

“The circumstances are what they are and from now on I accept the responsibility bravely, it can’t be any other way.

“We have a group of players who have been together for two years to work towards the World Cup and I have been sporting director, so I understand the motivation is huge.

“We cannot alter two years of hard work in the coming days – from now until the Portugal match, we don’t have the ability to change much.

“The key is to change as little as possible. We cannot change anything in two days.”
