Diego Maradona claims North America doesn’t deserve to host World Cup
Argentine legend Diego Maradona has claimed that Mexico and the rest of North America do not deserve to host the 2026 World Cup.
It was announced this week that the North American bid had won the right to host the competition in 8 years time.
The competition will be hosted over Mexico, the USA and Canada after the joint bid was seen to be the best option.
The joint bid received 134 of the 210 votes while Morocco’s bid to host the competition received 65 votes.
Speaking after the result, US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro explained just how humbled they were over the bid win.
“We are humbled by the trust our colleagues in the Fifa family have put in our bid; strengthened by the unity between our three countries and the Concacaf region; and excited by the opportunity we have to put football on a new and sustainable path for generations to come,” he explained, as quoted by the Guardian.
Though, some are less thrilled about the World Cup being held in North America, specifically Diego Maradona.
The Argentine has slammed the notion of the World Cup being held there by explaining there is no passion.
“I do not like it. There is no passion, Canadians will be good skiers, Americans wanted to do four times of 25 (minutes) for advertising,” said Maradona on a TV show on the Telesur network, as quoted by Expansion.
“Mexico wins here, Mexico does not deserve it because Mexico actually wins two games, the Mexicans come against Brazil or Germany and outside (…) Aeroméxico.”
