Arsenal rebuffed in bid for out-of-favour Chelsea defender
As per an exclusive report from French outlet Le10Sport this afternoon, Arsenal have seen an offer for David Luiz rejected by Chelsea.
31-year-old central defender Luiz is currently enjoying his second spell at Stamford Bridge, having made his comeback to the club from PSG for a fee of around £34 million in the summer of 2016.
While his return was originally met with mixed reviews from fans of the club, the South American’s signing initially looked to have been an inspired piece of business on the part of the Blues’ board, as Luiz enjoyed an absolutely stellar campaign at the heart of the Chelsea defence during the 2016/17 season to help guide the capital giants to the Premier League title.
However, this past season proved to be a different story altogether for Luiz, as a dismal showing during an embarrassing 3-0 Champions League defeat at the hands of AS Roma saw the Brazilian dropped and subsequently replaced in Chelsea’s starting XI by Andreas Christensen.
A rumoured fall-out with Antonio Conte, coupled with a number of injury problems over the second-half of the campaign, eventually saw Luiz finish the season having managed just 15 appearances, only 5 of which came since the turn of the year.
As such, unsurprisingly, the Selecao stopper, who was left out of his country’s squad for the World Cup, has inevitably been linked with a departure from Stamford Bridge this summer, with the likes of Napoli, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Arsenal having all been touted as potential destinations.
And, as per the aforementioned report from Le10Sport this afternoon, the latter of these sides have today seen a 20 million Euro bid for Luiz knocked back by Chelsea.
The report also adds that they are not yet aware whether the Gunners will return with a second offer or not, but that Luiz is highly-likely to be on the move this summer, if Antonio Conte remains in charge at Stamford Bridge.
