Toni Kroos discusses chances of retaining World Cup with Germany
Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kross has played down Germany’s chances of retaining their World Cup trophy in Russia this summer.
Joachim Löw’s side won the last edition of the competition and rightly so but could face a bigger task this year.
Brazil, France and Spain are all among the favourites and it will likely be harder for Germany to retain their trophy this summer.
Though, some still think that Joachim Löw’s side could very easily win the competition if they are in form.
Now, star midfielder Toni Kroos has had his say.
‘Things have changed’
The Real Madrid star has explained that history dictates just how hard it will be for them to retain the trophy.
Not only that, but a lot has changed since the 2014 competition within their squad and with other nations.
“Clearly, this is not that easy a task,” he explained, as quoted by the Daily Mirror.
“Only two teams have done it in the last 20 World Cups. That tells the real story.
“The most difficult task is to defend the World Cup successfully. We need to improve and play at our best like we did in 2014 to achieve it.
“Things have changed — both in our team as well as in other teams. We have played against a few big teams and we were not as dominant. That gave us a clear picture.
“Other teams had improved too in this period of four years m— the Brazil of 2018 is much better than the team from 2014. We are one of the favourites, undoubtedly, but not the overwhelming favourites.”
