The one decision Antonio Conte made that ruined his Chelsea career

The one decision Antonio Conte made that ruined his Chelsea career

Former Chelsea player Deco has explained why he thinks Antonio Conte will be leaving the club this summer, and where he went wrong.

Conte of course won the Premier League in his debut season at Chelsea and looked like staying for some time, but a disastrous second season means he looks nailed on to be sacked this summer once compensation is worked out – and Deco thinks it all goes back to one decision.

The former Portuguese international claimed that allowing Diego Costa to leave and creating a situation that spiralled out of hand when the duo fell out has caused issue after issue, and that the Blues have never replaced him properly.

“The Premier League over the last few years has become more competitive. There is a lot of big teams, a lot of replacements,” Betfair ambassador Deco told Express Sport.

“I think we will see changing winners in the next years. Manchester City, they did something not normal in the Premier League.

“But Chelsea they won last season and for me they lost one important player like Diego Coata, that’s my opinion.

“The way they play, Diego was very important for them. It was difficult to find a substitution. Morata is not the same, even Giroud is not the same. Diego was for me the perfect player for the way Conte played.

“I think they lost [Nemanja] Matic too, they had good midfielders but I think for me it was Diego Costa [leaving].”

New manager

Chelsea will be looking for a new manager this summer, yet their fans are becoming increasingly concerned that the Blues still have Conte in charge – and aren’t making moves in the transfer market either.

Should Conte stay, some Chelsea players will look to leave, with Willian being one of them – and it seems that the likes of Eden Hazard are waiting to see what happens with the manager before making their own decision on what to do in terms of a new contract, meaning Chelsea need to act fast or risk their summer falling apart.
