Spain name Albert Celades as their new manager after shock Julen Lopetegui axing
Spain have named Albert Celades as their new manager on the eve of the World Cup, after shockingly dispensing with Julen Lopetegui after the manager decided to join Real Madrid next season.
The Spanish FA were furious with the decision of Lopetegui, and wanted to sack him yesterday yet the players protested – however a decision was quickly made and a presser called for earlier today, with the new Real Madrid boss now waiting for the season to start and facing a summer out of work.
It was a shocking decision and one that rocked football, given most people thought it would be in the best interests of the side to keep things as they were – yet they now face the World Cup and opening game against Portugal with Albert Celades in charge.

Celades has been promoted from managing the under 21 squad, and will know the players well – yet it’s certainly a gamble from Spain, who were of course considered one of the favourites for the tournament.
Fernando Hierro will also help coach the side, who face Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in a couple of days – at the worst possible time.
It’s a huge boost for Portugal, who will now be looking to top their group and take advantage of Spain when they face each other on Friday, and it seems as though Ronaldo will also want to make sure the country he plays his domestic football in remember he’s just as skilled on the international stage.
Spain had been one of the favourites to win the World Cup, let alone in terms of winning their group, yet how the camp now feel about the developments remains to be seen – and the lasting impact may well see their tournament plunged into crisis.
