Slaven Bilic talks about his World Cup favourites

World Cup

Slaven Bilic thinks Brazil are the out and out favourites for the World Cup, and noted that they have so many key players it would be silly not to consider them favourites.

He noted that playing in Europe won’t be an issue for the players – given they do it for their clubs anyway, and that age old problem isn’t anything to consider ahead of the summer.

He said to Standard Sport: “First I pick Brazil as one of my favourites because they have special players who can win matches, such as Neymar, Philippe Coutinho and Gabriel Jesus.

Yes, I know that South American teams historically don’t win the competition in Europe but Brazil did it in 1958 in Sweden so why not again?

You have to take notice of tradition and history and the evidence is not in favour of the South American teams, but I would give this Brazilian team a very good chance.

A lot of their players play in Europe anyway. It’s not like it was years ago, when it was a new experience for them.”

Golden Boot

When it comes to the Golden Boot, there are plenty of contenders – and Neymar will be one of the hot favourites for the individual award, and Bilic thinks he will also be a key person in Russia for his national side to boot.

He spoke about Neymar and said: “Of course Neymar is their key and it is to be hoped that his fractured toe has healed and that he will be 100 per cent.”

Neymar feared he could miss the competition at one point, after serious injury during his first season at PSG, yet looks set to lead Russia this summer, and has proven his fitness and looks very sharp judging by his friendly performance.
