Sam Allardyce ‘jealous’ and ‘disappointed’ over England being in Russia

Sam Allardyce has spoken to the BBC about being sacked as England manager after getting caught up in a newspaper sting and noted he still feels bitter over the ending – and should have been given more time.

Standard Sport carry quotes from the programme, and claim that while Allardyce wants the England side to do well in Russia, he’s still far from happy with the way he was treated and thinks there should have been more time taken in the decision to fire him once the pictures and video from the incident came out.

He said:“Jealous is what I feel. Massively disappointed. That should be me there. Unfortunately because of the circumstances that wasn’t the case.

“…If a bit more time was taken, a bit more patience, I believe I should still be the England manager.

“I’ve bounced back now – and while I will be extremely jealous I will be watching Gareth and the lads and hope they do extremely well.”

Different vibe

While Allardyce no doubt thinks he would have been the right man for England, there were many who disagreed with the decision to give him the role in the first place, and seeing how well Gareth Southgate has dealt with the younger players and expectations around the side has certainly made him seem like a great alternative.

Southgate has made sure the players feel free to express themselves on and off the pitch, noting they need to feel unshackled and free to attack – and also speak their mind off it, as Danny Rose has shown.

Quite if that would have been the same with Allardyce in charge remains to be seen.
