Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui slammed for plunging Spain into crisis

Bad timing

Julen Lopetegui has been heavily criticised for announcing he’s joining Real Madrid come the start of next season – and then putting the Spanish FA in the position where they feel as though they have to sack him to give the team the best possible chance on the eve of the World Cup.

ESPN pundit Alejandro Moreno has claimed the timing is not only terrible, but that Spain were one of the favourites and are now in serious trouble after swapping coaches right before the Portugal game – one that could decide the top of their group.

“The timing could not be worse,” Moreno said on ESPN.

“We’re days away from the World Cup and Spain is one of the favourites to win this tournament.

“Somehow, now the attention of Spain is divided. Call me old school but maybe your priorities should be on the World Cup.

“Maybe you don’t worry about Real Madrid, maybe you tell them to do it after the tournament.

“From the perspective of the outside looking in, I’m saying your focus should be on having your team prepared.”

He added that the players will have been all unsettled – and despite rumours that there was a player intervention after Sergio Ramos and some other players made it clear they didn’t want to lose their manager, it was inevitable.

He added that some of the players would not be able to cope with the fact their international manager was about to leave for Real Madrid come the end of the season and that the right thing to do would have been to wait until after the World Cup had finished.

“The timing is all wrong, it’s unacceptable to be quite honest with you. The way I look at it, you focus on the team you have at hand, the tournament that you have in front of you and the players in your locker room.

“We’re not just talking about any tournament or any team, we’re talking about Spain and Real Madrid – how you are able to juggle that?

“It’s something that I don’t think he should have put himself through, but more importantly he should not be putting his players through.

“The conversation in Spain and in the Spanish media, you know what every press conference and every question is going to be about.

“He’s exposed himself now and opened a door that he didn’t need to open. If Real Madrid is really interested in you, what’s wrong with saying, ‘Let’s talk after the tournament’s over’.”
