Terry Butcher has claimed Harry Kane can win the Golden Boot at the World Cup, and become the first English man to do so since Gary Lineker.

Kane has once again had a brilliant season when it comes to his goalscoring exploits for club Tottenham Hotspur, and it seems he could well carry that over to the World Cup in Russia, where he will of course wear the armband for England and have the added pressure of not only providing the goals, but also leading his side.

Terry Butcher thinks that can only be a good thing, and fully backed the young player.

He said to the Express: “I am looking forward to him bursting onto the World Cup scene and making a real name for himself.

In fact, I would go as far as to say that Gary Lineker may soon no longer be able to go on about how he is the only English player to win the World Cup Golden Boot.

Good as Gary had been in the league that season, nobody had been talking about him before the 1986 tournament scoring the six goals he got and winning the award.

By the same token, it still seems crazy to be talking about an England player – even Harry – being in with a shout of being the top scorer at a tournament which will include both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

But if Harry can get off to a good start and England can get off to a good start in the campaign, there is no reason at all why he cannot do what Lineker did.

I look at him and he is a good finisher – sometimes you don’t know how he has found the back of the net, but he does because he moves the ball to the side, bang! No backlift, he’s hit the target. Left foot or right foot.”

No pressure

It many well be one of the first World Cups that England are going into with a good sense of feeling and a manager who wants them to enjoy their football and just play.

Many ex-players and pundits have spoken about how the media can have a negative impact on the players and it seems that while certain sections of the press have tried that with some players, for the most part, the team is focused and more vitally, all ready to help push and support each other on their way through the competition.
